An evocative Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Tikhvin Mother of God, or Bogomater Tikhvinskaya, dating to the late Imperial period.
The composition follows the traditional Hodegetria iconographic model, with the Virgin presenting the Christ Child seated upon her left arm. Christ raises one hand in blessing, while his crossed legs and prominently displayed upturned foot are distinctive features of the Tikhvin image. The Virgin’s gently inclined head and solemn expression convey the quiet tenderness and devotional intensity associated with this highly venerated subject.
The painted image is executed on a prepared wooden panel and protected by an elaborate repoussé and chased metal oklad, also known as a riza. The richly worked cover incorporates contrasting silver- and gold-toned surfaces, intricately patterned garments, dense floral scrollwork, and dramatic radiant halos. Flame-like rays extend above the rectangular frame, lending the icon a particularly imposing ceremonial presence.
