An exceptionally decorative French Louis XV style cartel wall clock in richly chased and gilded bronze (ormolu), signed Lecomte, Paris, presented against a shaped deep crimson-red velvet panel.
The elaborate asymmetrical case is conceived in the full Rococo taste, with exuberant scrolling acanthus leaves, pierced foliate ornament, shell-like curves and sweeping C-scrolls enveloping the circular clock face. The fluid movement of the gilt-bronze case is characteristic of the Louis XV aesthetic, creating an almost sculptural composition around the dial.
The white enamel dial displays Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, complemented by finely pierced and gilt hands. The dial is signed “Lecomte” with a Paris address below. Importantly, a documented comparable cartel is catalogued with the dial signed “Lecomte, 21 rue Daval Paris” and described as Louis XV style.
