A rare Etruscan cast-bronze simpulum (ceremonial ladle), Italy, circa 6th century BCE, distinguished by its elongated handle terminating in a shallow rounded bowl, displayed on a custom lucite stand.
The vessel is formed with a shallow rounded bowl extending into a remarkably long, slender handle, which curves downward at its upper terminal. The surface displays an extensive green, turquoise and earthen encrusted patina, giving the bronze a particularly evocative archaeological character.
The simpulum—also known in Latin as a simpuvium—was a type of ladle associated with the serving and distribution of liquids and with ritual libations.
