A finely rendered 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Miracle Worker alongside Venerable Eustolia of Constantinople, presenting two revered figures of the Eastern Orthodox tradition.
At left, Saint Nicholas the Miracle Worker is shown in his traditional role as Bishop of Myra, dressed in elaborate episcopal vestments and holding a Gospel book. One of the most widely venerated saints in Orthodox Christianity, Saint Nicholas is traditionally represented as a defender of the faithful, protector of travelers and the vulnerable, and a celebrated miracle worker. His episcopal garments and Gospel emphasize his authority as bishop and teacher of the Church. The Gospel is a characteristic attribute in Russian iconography of Saint Nicholas.
At right is Venerable Eustolia of Constantinople, depicted in monastic attire. According to Orthodox tradition, Eustolia was originally from Rome and later settled in Constantinople, where she entered the monastic life and became respected for her ascetic devotion and spiritual counsel. She died around A.D. 610 and is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on November 9.
