A beautifully executed 19th-century oil-on-canvas interpretation of Friedrich Paul Thumann’s celebrated composition The Three Fates. The painting depicts the mythological sisters Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho, who together govern the thread of human destiny.

At center, Clotho, draped in luminous white, begins the thread of life. To her left sits Lachesis, dressed in deep red, measuring out the thread as she gazes contemplatively toward her work. At right rests Atropos, traditionally the cutter of the thread, portrayed here as an elder figure cloaked in earth-toned garments, surrounded by symbolic flowers that allude to the cycles of life and death.

Rendered with fine academic technique and rich classical detail, the painting is housed in its original, deeply carved, giltwood frame, adding grandeur and authenticity. The work displays the hallmarks of late 19th-century European academic painting—soft modeling, harmonious color, and romanticized classicism.

Frame: 51" H × 43" W x 4" D (original giltwood frame)

Canvas: 40" H × 32" W
