A striking late-19th-century Chinese Canton famille rose porcelain vase, later mounted as a substantial table lamp with finely cast bronze fittings.
The baluster-form porcelain body is richly hand-painted in the traditional famille rose palette. Architectural reserves depict detailed court scenes populated by dignitaries, attendants, and scholars in colorful robes. These narrative panels are surrounded by profuse peonies, fruiting branches, birds, and scrolling foliage in shades of rose, coral, turquoise, cobalt blue, and green.
Dimensional applied chilong dragons animate the vase’s rounded shoulders, while sculptural bird-form handles flank the neck. These raised elements give the porcelain an especially tactile and exuberant character typical of elaborate Chinese export wares produced during the late Qing dynasty.
The vase is raised on an ornate circular bronze base terminating in four foliate feet and finished above with a complementary bronze collar and lamp fitting. The warm aged bronze provides an elegant contrast to the brightly enameled porcelain. A clean white drum shade completes the lamp while allowing the exceptional decoration to remain the focal point.
