Exceptional carved brown & black obsidian bull sculpture, attributed to Manfred Gettman of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, and retailed by Robert Juchem. Finely carved from a single specimen of Russian brown and black obsidian, the figure is finished with a highly realistic textured surface to emulate the natural hide of the animal.
The bull is detailed with contrasting black onyx horns and hooves, and inset cabochon ruby eyes set within gold bezels. Compact yet powerful in form, the sculpture captures the strength and movement of the bull through precise lapidary carving and elegant material contrast.
Idar-Oberstein has long been recognized for gemstone and hardstone carving, with Robert Juchem known for hand-carved animal sculptures and objets d’art.
