A striking and unusual French Neo-Grec Revival mantel clock, circa 1870, featuring a richly veined rouge griotte marble case adorned with gilt bronze mounts. The arched body is centered by a circular dial with gilt Roman numerals and Breguet hands, framed within a gilt brass hinged bezel. The twin-key escapements are positioned above finely cast paterae roundels, flanked by knob finials that extend into beaded rods.
At the crest, a gilt scrolling anthemion finial rests on a cylindrical support, adding grandeur to the design. The clock is elevated on double-ringed circular legs, resting on a rectangular plinth with sloped rouge griotte panels, all enclosed in a gilt bronze molded frame. The lower section features tendril-cast paw feet, framing a curved shell pendant apron, enhancing the clock’s sculptural quality.
This exceptional example of Neo-Grec design embodies the refined craftsmanship of late 19th-century France, making it a remarkable statement piece for collectors and admirers of classical revival timepieces.
