A remarkable early 20th-century Japanese silk embroidered naval souvenir commemorating an American serviceman’s cruise aboard the U.S.A.T. Sherman, richly worked with patriotic imagery, international flags, a period portrait, and a photographic image of the transport ship at Nagasaki, Japan.
The central composition is embroidered on a deep brown silk ground and prominently inscribed “In Memory of My Cruise in China and Japan.” A large spread-winged American eagle crowns the arrangement, positioned above a fan of embroidered national and maritime flags representing the international ports and territories encountered during the voyage. The lower inscription references Philippines and Hawaii, with “U.S.A.T. Sherman” prominently displayed beneath the ship photograph.
At the center is a period portrait of the serviceman, surrounded by elaborate silk and metallic-thread embroidery. Below, a photographic postcard depicts the U.S. Army Transport Sherman taking on coal at Nagasaki, Japan, providing an unusually direct historical connection between the textile and the vessel itself.
