A monumental hand-carved wooden figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, dating to the late 19th century and retaining traces of its original polychrome decoration.
The figure is depicted seated upon an elaborately carved pedestal base, wearing an ornate crown and layered robes adorned with jewelry and flowing drapery. Guanyin’s serene facial expression and graceful posture embody the calm compassion traditionally associated with this revered figure in Buddhist iconography.
The sculpture displays refined carving throughout, particularly in the cascading folds of the garments and the detailed treatment of the headdress and ornaments. One hand is raised in a gentle gesture of blessing and compassion, while the other rests naturally across the lap, creating a balanced and contemplative composition.
Remnants of the original polychrome pigments, including warm earth tones and traces of green and red, remain visible across the surface, adding depth and character while reflecting the sculpture’s devotional origins.
