A magnificent large-scale Japanese Satsuma lidded jar dating to the Meiji Period (circa 1880s), richly decorated with intricate gilt embellishments and finely detailed hand-painted figural scenes. This impressive covered vessel exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship and decorative artistry for which Satsuma ware is renowned.
The globular body is adorned with elaborate scenes depicting noblemen engaged in scholarly pursuits on one side and children at play on the other, all rendered with remarkable detail against a finely decorated ground enriched with extensive gold decoration. The domed lid is surmounted by a spirited fu dog finial, while two additional sculptural fu dogs serve as dramatic handles, lending both symbolism and visual dynamism to the piece.
Raised on three supports, including a prominent lion-mask-form front leg, the vessel displays the lavish ornamentation and exuberant character associated with the finest export wares produced during Japan's Meiji era. The combination of finely painted figural decoration, extensive gilding, and sculptural elements makes this a striking display piece for collectors of Japanese ceramics and Asian decorative arts.
