An imposing Continental Italian glazed terracotta earthenware jardinière from the Early 20th century, with striking and highly decorative faun (satyr) mask handles—an unmistakable nod to Bacchic and neoclassical design traditions.
The vessel features a deeply lobed, pumpkin-form body rising from a substantial pedestal base, finished in a lustrous high-gloss glaze in rich oxblood, amber, and coppery tones with beautiful tonal variation throughout. The sculpted faun masks, with curling horns, expressive features, and flowing beards, are finely modeled and project boldly from the rim, adding theatrical presence and mythological character.
This Bacchic imagery—associated with wine, revelry, and classical antiquity—places the piece firmly within a decorative tradition that blends Renaissance revival and later European ornamental ceramics. The scale and sculptural quality make it a commanding centerpiece, equally suited as a planter or standalone object.
