A striking pair of early 19th century Italian neoclassical console tables, executed in ebonized wood with gilt bronze mounts, faux porphyry and faux marble decoration.
Each console features a rectangular faux porphyry top, richly colored in deep red tones to imitate the prized imperial stone used in classical antiquity. The frieze is decorated with rectangular faux marble panels framed by gilt borders, contrasting elegantly against the dramatic ebonized ground.
The consoles are supported by distinctive gilt bronze mounted caryatid figures positioned at the front corners. These classical female figures, rendered with finely modeled drapery and musculature, serve as both decorative and structural elements, reflecting the strong influence of Grand Tour taste and neoclassical design prevalent in Italy during the early 19th century.
The tapered legs are joined by a shaped stretcher terminating in a central decorative finial element, with additional gilt bronze rosettes adorning the feet. The contrast of gilded bronze, dark ebonized wood, and faux stone finishes creates a sophisticated architectural composition characteristic of Italian neoclassical furniture.
